Barry Brian Bergschneider

December 5, 1960 – May 6, 2013

Barry Brian Bergschneider was born on December 5th, 1960 at Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base in Grandview, Missouri, located south of Kansas City. His family consisted at that time of parents Capt. Ethan Allen Bergschneider and Mona Jean Bergschneider, a sister Sherry, age 5, and a brother Gary, age 19 months.

His weight at birth was almost 10 pounds with a full head of jet black hair.  His dad couldn’t wait for the barber!

Since Dad had been scheduled to go to Japan and had asked for a delay for the birth, he was shortly “rewarded” with an assignment to Goose Bay, Labrador.  He had to leave without the family initially, but returned after about six months to retrieve the family.

Being an Air Force family, we transferred from Goose Bay to Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City; Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama; Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines; MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa (living in St. Petersburg); Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton Beach; and finally Patrick Air Force Base in Cocoa Beach.

During these relocations, Barry enjoyed all of the thrills and pleasures of a young growing boy.  He became quite proficient in water skiing and took pleasure in bicycling and skateboarding.

Barry’s permanent residence was in Merritt Island where he attended Merritt Island High School.  His schooling was cut short and his life forever changed after a motorcycle accident at age 17.  He could no longer enjoy many of his past pleasures.

However, after the accident, Barry continued riding his bicycle and skateboarding, but could no longer do some of the more challenging activities like water skiing.  He enjoyed watching car racing and his favorite driver was Dale Earnhardt, Sr.  He collected racing memorabilia, old bottles, and lighters. He liked jewelry, especially the eagle necklace and rings that he wore.

He resided with his parents for the remainder of his life. Approximately two years ago, Barry was diagnosed with lung cancer, which eventually led to hospice care.

Barry is survived by his parents, sister, brother, two nieces and their husbands, a nephew and his wife, and their combined five children; along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Barry will be resting at Buckner, Missouri in a family plot.

3 Condolences

  • I am very sad to read this. I know that Gary and I lost touch after High school, but I’ve often wondered how Barry and all of you have been doing. I have many fond memories of having them as friends, visiting your house, and going out on the boats. I remember one time when Mr. B took Gary, Barry, myself , Greg and Jeff Daignault out into the ocean in the big Chris Craft. I think every one of us ended up puking over the side of the boat (except for Mr. B, or course).

  • Barry no longer has any disabilities and is at peace. You have been wonderful parents. May the good memories soon replace the difficult memories. Be good to yourselves and know that many are thinking of you.

  • We are Very Sorry for your loss.
